It’s the endless stacks of cans and cartons. It’s the willing grins of volunteers. A charity is filled with the holiday spirit, with donations offered daily to help it meet its many goals. Such donations — although greatly appreciated and forever accepted — are not precisely what is needed, however. They represent the fast fixes and quick results; they offer the immediate rewards. They do not provide aid for the future, though, and there is uncertainty of whether an organization will even last beyond the winter season.

This seems to be too much of an impracticality — if donations are being provided, how could a charity fail? The reason is all too simple and all too common: without the necessary funding, no organization can continue to operate as needed. While offerings of food, toys, clothing and more are always wanted, money is instead considered the greatest gift an individual can provide.

Not only will all dollars be divided among the main cause (ensuring that deserving families receive the help they need), but they will also be given to the day to day obligations of the charity itself. All monthly bills can finally be addressed without concern. All promotions can be made without worry.

It is because of this that individuals are encouraged to provide money instead of their spare goods. While these are welcomed, they can’t always ensure success. Funding, however, can. And — as the holiday season approaches and the need for true participation is required — every spare penny helps. The greatest gift that can be offered is simple cash.

This is not the sensibility most recognize. It seems to lack all personality, is thought instead to be defined by apathy. The truth, however, is that money donations make a drastic impact within every charity: they are what is most craved.

Continue to offer your time and energy; but couple it also with any dollars you can provide. The results will be satisfying.
