It’s a season defined to snow, to the desperate climates — the temperatures all drop; the hours become long; and you are thankful always for the protection of long sleeves, the warmth of a coat. It’s a necessity you have never been without, has been shaped into an expectation. You could never face the winter without your many layers; and you are forever stunned to learn that so many individuals must. There are families who are forced to be without what you have become accustomed to.
And you wish to change this.
Clothing donations are not as common among charities as the usual food and funds. Most believe that their efforts are served best through writing checks and providing towers of canned goods. While these actions are undeniably important, the need for clothing is just as pressing. Individuals without the appropriate fabrics will not be able to combat the season; and this could prove deadly.
It is essential therefore for donors to offer clothing. This does not require a sudden purchase of new threads (the expense of that would keep most from being able to accomplish it, limiting them to only one item). Instead it merely demands searching through closets, finding older outfits and understanding which of these can be given.
Choose pieces that can no longer be worn by you — whether due to their sizes or lack of style (which is the reason must children will cite). Gently used items can be donated and things like jackets, sweaters, jeans, shirts, shoes and more should be considered. Personal clothing (like undergarments) is not usually recommended; but unopened packages can be accepted. All fabrics should be in good condition. And shoes should be without tears in the lining or broken laces.
Donating clothing is a process too often ignored by individuals. But this does not eliminate the necessity of it. Give all you can and offer families the chance to finally be warm this year.
